The Band Whisperer, David Morrison
This text employs common-sense teaching tools developed by master educator David Morrison to help band directors in all ranges of experience and expertise continue to improve their art and craft - find their best game - in the development of beautiful characteristic ensemble tone; superb intonation; rhythmic accuracy; and exceptional balance and blend, articulation, technique, and musicianship. But just having the tools is not sufficient for success. The real key is using personal intuition - whispering - to effectively wield those tools. In the tradition of horse whisperers, dog whisperers, and baby whisperers who calm and otherwise transform their charges, The Band Whisperer examines how technique and aesthetics combine to move the hearts and minds of musicians and their audiences.
The Band Director’s Companion, Harry Haines
An Understandable Approach To Musical Expression, Kenneth Laudermilch
Designed to enhance the expressive ability of instrumentalists of every age, this concise, easy-to-understand guide presents twenty-two musical concepts that remove the mystery and provide proficiency in the art of musical expression.
On Teaching Band: Notes from Eddie Green– Mary Ellen Cavitt
If you only read one book, this is the one! So many great ideas here. This book transformed my teaching!
Tuning for Wind Instruments: A Roadmap to Successful Intonation – Shelley Jagow, This is the ultimate resource on intonation! The charts for each instrument are amazing.
The Talent Code – Daniel Coyle, Great information on how talent is “grown.” While not specific to musical talent, its content is highly applicable to the classroom. Also check out Daniel’s companion book, The Little Book of Talent.
Teaching Music through Performance in Middle School Band – ed. Richard Miles, Chapters by leading middle school band directors about all the issues we deal with that are unique to middle school band as well as reviews of great band literature grades 1-3.5
Pathways (A Guide For Energizing And Enriching Band, Orchestra And Choral Programs) – Joseph Alsobrook
Lots of practical ideas here!
